The hops are also weighed, and placed in separate containers. There are typically three separate additions of hops: one at the beginning of the boil for bittering, one part way through for flavoring, and one near the end of the boil for aroma. The recipe we are making in the photograph only requires two hop additions. The small screw-top vial contains Irish Moss, a form of dried seaweed that helps to clarify the beer. A teaspoon is added about 15 minutes before the end of the boil.
